And I Will Comfort You is spoken-word compilation of 36 poems written by brilliant native New Yorker Ruth Hogarth Burritt (1879-1960) and performed by Broadway veteran actor Saireh Woods. Saireh’s radiant voice expresses Burritt’s timeless words about love and marriage, motherhood, war and grief, gardening, and nature - while transporting the listener to a world where everyday life and nature gently intertwine; and where love and beauty are the expressions of our deepest humanity. This very special recording is a collection of poetry on maternal values and qualities, interwoven with piano music and nature sounds. Meditative and thought-provoking, this CD reminds us that the search for peace in the world starts first with our connection to Nature and within our hearts and our own families. But it’s more than this, really. It’s a way of honoring the creativity of those who came before us – a way to connect the spirit and quiet wisdom of their time with a 21st century world desperately in need of both. These are things we need right now, this remembrance of home and love and nature. Although Burritt’s poetry was never published during her life, two books of her work were published in 1978 and 1984. Burritt was in many ways a remarkable woman – a suffragist who worked with Susan B. Anthony, a woman educated far beyond the boundaries of early 20th century custom, a mother of six who shared with her husband, a public health advocate, a lifelong concern for women and children.

Professional Recording Artist, Saireh Woods, is a Broadway veteran who received wide acclaim for her work with gifted artists such as Sir Clifford Williams, Stephen Sondheim; and Hal Price, one of Broadway’s best producers and directors. For Saireh, the poems on this CD are meaningful because they come from someone like her own grandparents who were the “salt of the earth”, with integrity of spirit, love for family, the land, and what grows on it. She comments, “I wanted to do this performance because we need to be re-reminded of our beloved ancestors, through whom we are still richly helped and deeply loved.”

Producer Rebecca Hogarth Whitehead lovingly dedicates this CD as a gift from one spirit (her grandmother) who came before us to your spirit today. Her grandmother, poet Ruth Hogarth Burritt, was a woman whose richness of heart and soul filled her life and words, allowing us to pause in amazement and gratitude for what has come into our lives today through her poetry. From another time, Burritt’s poems are universal statements of the human heart, triumphs of the feminine spirit, and the reverence of nature. Through the art of words, she extolled the nobility of the human spirit, and found peace and tranquility in tenuous times. Whitehead comments, “It is my hope and my dream that Saireh will take you to that far off place where you love and are loved, and are filled with what you have always known to be true and beautiful.” Whitehead's own photographs illustrate.
